Hello Heroes customers!

July marches on and we have another week of incredible comic books!!

 

Lots of major releases this week, including a Return of Bruce Wayne tie-in (Time Masters #1), the debut of IDW's True Blood series, the milestone 75th issue of Image's Walking Dead (you're reading that, right??), new installments in both (adjectiveless) Avengers (issue #3) and New Avengers (issue #2), a brand new book from Alan Moore called Neonomicon (see "Speculator's Space!") and the second installment of the JLA/JSA crossover event (JSA #41). Not too shabby!

 

Unfortunately, we have had to delay the announcement of June's Book of the Month for one more week - bear with us!

Vince Ottone's "‘Buy This or Get Whacked' DC Pick of the Week"
Winner: Time Masters: Vanishing Point #1

Acting as a side series to Grant Morrison's Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, Time Masters: Vanishing Point tells the story of the titular "Time Masters" - Superman, Green Lantern, Booster Gold and Rip Hunter - and their attempt to find Bruce Wayne in the timestream.

 

Anyone reading the parent series knows that the rest of the Justice League has (FINALLY!) responded to Tim Drake/Red Robin's evidence that Wayne is alive and that they have sent a small team to find him. While ­The Return of Bruce Wayne is providing readers a detailed, wonderfully decompressed narrative showcasing the former Batman's time-hopping trials we have yet to see much of these so-called Time Masters [In fact, they have appeared in as little as a panel or two per issue! -Ross].

 

While it's certainly been fun to see Wayne appear as a cave man, a puritan, and more recently a pirate, one thing that hasn't been explained so far is the impact that Bruce's... "unscheduled appearances"... have had on the time stream: In short, time is tearing itself apart thanks to their friend and it's up to Clark, Hal and the others to repair the damage before it's too late!

 

Both written and drawn by the incomparable Dan Jurgens (The Death of Superman, Booster Gold, the Superman #700 segment guest-starring Dick Grayson's Robin), Time Masters promises an exciting companion to the ongoing saga of Bruce Wayne's return to the modern-day DCU.

 

Don't leave this one on the stands, as it is bound to disappear faster than you can say "Omega Beam!"

Andy Ellinas' "‘The Greek Goes Geek!' Mighty Marvel Mag of the Week"
Winner: Heroic Age: Prince of Power #3

HUGE week this time guys! I expect to walk out with at least 20 books this week, SO SHOULD YOU!!! Obviously we cannot showcase every book, but I will at least run through the Marvel Titles I am picking up this week, followed by the winner this week! I'm super (no pun intended) X-cited (pun intended) for some continuations this week and a few new storylines!

Here's a rundown of titles that I will be enjoying:


Atlas #3 - Many second printings of #2 and possibly #1 still available. One of Ross' HIGHLY recommended books

Avengers #3 - Wonder Man on a rampage, time traveling heroes, Kid Avengers running the future, THE END OF KANG?!?

Dark Wolverine #88 - Rematch: Daken vs. Frankencastle...WOW

Deadpool #25 - Always a fun read

Deadpool Merc with a Mouth #13 - End of the crazy series starring Zombie Deadpool's head

Lady Deadpool #1 - It's a #1 AND its Deadpool, grab this before it sells out. It will. Trust me.

New Avengers #2 - It's an Avenger title, of course I want it!

New Mutants #15 - See how XSC affects the New Mutants in a brand new arc!

Ultimate Comics Avengers 2 #5 (of 6) - *pant pant pant* LOTS of words! Interesting story arc with Frank Castle (not the monster)

Ultimate Comics New Ultimates #3 (of 5) - Frank Cho is amazing. 'Nuff said.

 

Alright, what did I leave out? OH YEAH!!! Prince of Power #3 (of 4) has been a highly anticipated release for me. Not only was the debut issue in the series our COMIC BOOK OF THE MONTH in May, but an issue I was not going to purchase. I was glad HOTTTTT Ross twisted my arm to buy it! [You're welcome Andy!! -Ross] Basically, Hercules is dead, but not in Tartarus...huh? That's not possible...is it? Yes, and young Amadeus Cho must find his best friend! Although a formidable opponent on his own, Cho has now joined forces with THOR in the quest to find Hercules! Join them on their mystical journey as they head to Egypt and battle the Goddess of Destruction SEKHMET!

 

Don't miss this issue, promised to be full of action and very witty humor!

Ross Haralson's "Small Press ‘HOTTTTT' Book of the Week"
Winner: True Blood #1

HBO's most-watched television show comes to comics!

Have you been wondering if the Emmy-nominated True Blood is as good as critics and viewers alike are claiming? Now is your chance! I don't know about you, but $14.99 is a lot of extra money per month to pay for a television channel that you may watch for, say, one or two shows. But $3.99 - that's not too bad at all for a monthly fix!

For those unfamiliar with the property, True Blood is not a vampire story for your average Twilight fan. Characters here don't waste time staring longingly into one another's eyes or glistening in the sun; no, these vampires will do anything to get what they want - and often do!

True Blood tells the story of a small group of men and women living in Bon Temps, Louisiana who face a transformed world when centuries-old vampire Bill Compton comes to town. While the world is aware of the existence of the undead - vampires have in fact become a recognized subset of the population, birthing a whole new era of civil rights conflict - the residents of Bon Temps are relatively unprepared to meet a vampire band and even more unprepared for the trouble that follows along behind him.

From naïve waitress Sookie Stackhouse to loyal bartender Sam Merlotte to flamboyant cook/drug dealer LaFayette, True Blood is filled to the brim with characters who will capture your attention and demand your devotion.

This series, co-plotted by series creator Alan Ball, tells the story of the cast's entrapment by a vengeful spirit intent on forcing them to share their deepest, darkest secrets.

Just be warned: True Blood is seriously addictive stuff and you may never be the same again!

Tim Roberts' "‘I Don't Read Comics... But If I Did I'd Totally Read This One' General Comic of the Week"
Winner: Amazing Spider-Man #638

Alright True Believers, if "The Grim Hunt" didn't convince you to return to Marvel's flagship property then "One Moment In Time," which begins this issue, ought to do the trick.

 

Advertised earlier this year through a series of black splash pages featuring the acronym "O.M.I.T.," this storyline finally answers the one question fans have been asking since the "Brand New Day" era began: What really happened on Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's wedding day?

 

Amazing Spider-Man has divided old and young fans alike since its introduction of "Brand New Day" in January of 2008. If you've been living in a hole for the past two and a half years, "Brand New Day" reintroduced readers to the unemployed, unmarried Peter Parker that everyone knows and loves from the early decades of Marvel Comics. However, this wasn't a reboot; Amazing Spider-Man has continued to exist in the current Marvel universe, only everyone has magically forgotten that Peter Parker is Spider-Man [Take that, Mark Millar and/or Civil War! -Ross]. Up to this point, all the reader has been told regarding the MJ/Peter relationship is that it ended badly...

 

...which brings us to the present, where Marvel is finally ready to pull back the curtain on all of the mysteries surrounding "Brand New Day" in a special four-part story, beginning with this issue, both written and drawn by industry legend Joe Quesada!

 

Those who dropped ­Amazing Spider-Man following the "One More Day" storyline won't get a better chance to jump on board than this issue, so set aside your fanboy/fangirl convictions and return to comics' most well-known and beloved hero!!

This week sees the release of a new Alan Moore series (yes, that Alan Moore, the one who wrote Watchmen) and you basically need to buy it.

 

It's called Neonomicon and it ties in heavily to the works of H.P. Lovecraft (think all things "Cthulhu"). That doesn't really matter, though; it's new Alan Moore.
